Review documents and installation before energizing

Pre-commissioning starts with the approved drawings and equipment list. Compare the installed silo, roof, foundation interfaces, anchor arrangement, hopper or flat-bottom outlet, conveyors, elevators, gates, ducts, fans, sensors, control panels, and access components with the project documents. Check that equipment tags, cable labels, rotation references, lubrication points, guards, isolation points, and maintenance access are identifiable.

This stage should also confirm that outstanding construction work is visible. Unfinished sealing, missing guards, incomplete cable routes, unclear gate positions, blocked access, unresolved drainage, or temporary supports can affect testing and should not be hidden by starting the system. Record each issue with its location, responsible party, required action, and effect on commissioning.

Test signals, alarms, and interlocks

Before material flow is introduced, verify the control signals that support the approved operating sequence. The relevant checks may include level indication, high-level alarm, low-level signal, temperature measurement, moisture input, fan status, gate position, conveyor running state, elevator status, emergency stop, overload indication, communication, and control-panel messages.

An interlock should be checked against the project logic and the actual equipment response. The test record should state the initiating condition, the expected response, the observed response, the alarm or message, the reset condition, and the person who witnessed the result. Do not bypass an interlock simply to complete a test. If the intended sequence is unclear, stop the test and refer the issue to the responsible controls and safety professionals.

Complete a controlled empty or no-load test

An empty test can help identify mechanical, electrical, control, and access issues before grain is introduced. The test plan may include individual equipment checks followed by the approved sequence for receiving, conveying, loading, aeration, discharge, cleaning, or transfer. The project team should observe abnormal noise, vibration, heating, movement, leakage, signal loss, unexpected stops, and communication faults.

The empty test should not be treated as proof of grain-handling performance. Grain can change loading, flow, dust, buildup, power demand, and equipment response. Record the conditions of the empty test, including the equipment route, control mode, test duration if specified, alarms, observations, and unresolved limitations.

Plan a controlled material test

A material test should use the grain, route, equipment settings, and operating conditions permitted by the project. Before the test, confirm the destination, product identity, route, downstream availability, sampling requirement, communication method, and stop criteria. The test team should know who can pause the sequence and who decides whether the material can be released, placed on hold, or moved to another location.

Observe the actual flow through the inlet, silo, outlet, chute, conveyor, elevator, and destination. Check for unexpected buildup, segregation indicators, blockage risk, dust conditions, spillage, gate response, level changes, temperature signals, and abnormal equipment behavior. These observations are project evidence, not universal performance claims. Capacity or throughput should be reported only with the defined measurement method and verified test conditions.

Verify data and traceability records

Commissioning should confirm that important operating data is recorded in a usable form. Depending on the project, this may include silo identity, lot identity, grain type, receiving time, loading route, unloading route, level reading, temperature record, moisture result, alarm history, operator action, quality status, and transfer destination.

A displayed value is not automatically a reliable record. Check time stamps, tag names, units, data retention, communication status, and the method used to export or review information. If a sensor requires calibration or verification, the acceptance record should identify the instrument, reference method, result, limitation, and next review requirement. Do not adjust a setpoint or manually rewrite a result simply to make a test appear successful.

Manage punch lists and retesting

A punch list should distinguish between a safety-critical issue, a functional defect, a documentation gap, a cosmetic item, and a condition that requires engineering review. Each item should have a unique reference, location, description, responsible party, priority, temporary control if applicable, corrective action, due date, and close-out evidence.

Retesting should use the same acceptance criterion unless the approved project team changes the requirement. The record should link the retest to the original issue and show whether the result was verified under the same or a revised condition. Closing a punch-list item without evidence can create uncertainty during future maintenance or warranty discussions.

Complete training and operational handover

Handover requires more than delivering a machine manual. Operators and maintenance personnel should receive information appropriate to their roles, including the approved operating sequence, alarm interpretation, normal inspection points, isolation responsibilities, cleaning requirements, sampling or quality records, escalation contacts, spare-parts information, and limitations identified during testing.

Training should use the actual control-panel messages and equipment route. The site team should know which decisions require maintenance, controls, engineering, safety, quality, or management involvement. Attendance, questions, unresolved training needs, and supplied documents should be recorded. The final handover package may include approved drawings, equipment lists, test sheets, calibration records, punch-list status, manuals, spare-parts information, and maintenance schedules.

Define final acceptance and warranty boundaries

Final acceptance should identify the documents and test evidence used for the decision. It should state any accepted limitation, operating restriction, pending item, responsibility transfer, and follow-up review. A signed form without the underlying test records may be difficult to interpret later.

Warranty responsibilities should be separated from normal maintenance, consumable replacement, site conditions, operator error, unauthorized modification, and upstream or downstream equipment supplied by other parties. The project documents should identify which supplier is responsible for the silo body, controls, conveyors, elevators, fans, sensors, installation, software, training, and commissioning support.
